Being generous with God

In his novel, The Diary of a Country Priest, by Georges Bernanos, the hero brings his life to a close with this prayer:

"Dear God, I give all to You, willingly. But I don't know how to give, I just let You take. The best is to remain quiet. Because, though I may not know how to give, You know how to take. . . Yet I would have wished to be, once, just once, magnificently generous to You."

In the History of Contemporary Western Philosophy, I teach my students the thoughts of the German Philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche.  For ages Nietzsche has been thought to be an atheistic philosopher, the one who had the boldness to pronounce the devastating judgment on God: “GOD IS DEAD”.  I remember way back in 2001 as a student of philosophy, when one of my senior companions wanted to do his final thesis on Nietzsche, he was strictly reprimanded by the superiors. 

Do we have a "Second Mile" in our lives?

There is often the concept of a “Second Mile” that is developed in the teachings of Jesus in the Gospel.  We come across this idea many times in his various discourses and speeches and especially in the Gospel of Mathew in his Sermon on the Mount.   This comes in contrast to the understanding of the Old Testament where the law simply stated: “An Eye for an Eye, a Tooth for a Tooth” which I don’t think has to be interpreted only in terms of retaliation, even though it was said to be the ‘Law of Retaliation’.  

Simple Things of Life

I found this little conversation damn interesting!  I don't know if it really happend. But one thing is sure; when we take time out to reflect on the simple, insignificant things of life, life gets much more meaning and depth and we gain wisdom of heart. That's what this story reveals!!

An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned To her and said, "Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."

നസ്രത്തിലെ നമ്മുടെ സുഹൃത്ത്

കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം ജോജു എന്ന  സഹോദരൻ ഫെസ് ബുക്കിൽ ഇട്ട പോസ്റ്റ്‌ കണ്ടു.  കണ്ണ് നിറഞ്ഞു പോയി.  അതെ, അവസാനത്തെ ചങ്ങാതിയും പടിയിറങ്ങുമ്പോൾ ആരുമറിയാതെ ഉള്ളിലെക്കെത്തുന്നവനാണ് നസ്രത്തിലെ നമ്മുടെ സ്നേഹിതൻ. 

സത്യം പറഞ്ഞാൽ കഥയിലെ വൃദ്ധനോട് നല്ല ഒരളവിൽ അസൂയ വരെ തോന്നുന്നുണ്ട്.  കാരണം വേറൊന്നുമല്ല, ഈ വൈകിയ വേളയിലെങ്കിലും അയാൾ തന്റെ യഥാര്ത സുഹൃത്തിനെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞല്ലോ. 

ചില മനുഷ്യവതാര ചിന്തകൾ!

"ദൈവത്തോട് ഒത്തു വസിച്ചവൻ മനുഷ്യർക്കിടയിൽ തന്റെ പാർപ്പിടം തീർക്കുന്നു;  അവർക്ക് ജീവനും വെളിച്ചവുമാകാൻ, അവർക്ക് ദൈവസ്വീകാര്യത നൽകാൻ.  മാംസം ധരിച്ച ദൈവം ശ്രവിക്കാനും, വീക്ഷിക്കാനും, തൊട്ടുനോക്കാനും പറ്റുന്ന ദൈവമാണ്.  അവൻ മനുഷ്യരുമായി കൂട്ടായ്മ തീർക്കുന്ന ദൈവമാണ്". (ബിഷപ്പ് ജോർജ് പാനികുളം)

 ലോകത്തിലെ എല്ലാ മതങ്ങളും ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്  ദൈവത്തിലേക്ക്  എത്തിചേരാൻ മനുഷ്യൻ ചെയ്യേണ്ട കാര്യങ്ങൾ  അവനെ ഓര്മിപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടാണ്.  ബുദ്ധമതത്തിലെ യോഗയും, ഹിന്ദുമതത്തിലെ അഷെറ്റിസിസവുമെല്ലാം അതിലേക്കുള്ള വഴികൾ തന്നെ. 
എന്നാൽ,  സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ കയ്യൊപ്പുള്ള ഈ മതം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് മനുഷ്യൻ ചെയ്യേണ്ട കാര്യങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടല്ല, മറിച്ച് മനുഷ്യനിലേക്ക് എത്തിപ്പെടാൻ ദൈവം ചെയ്ത കാര്യങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി അവനെ ഓര്മിപ്പിച്ചുക്കൊണ്ടാണ്. "തന്റെ സ്വപുത്രനെ നല്കാൻ തക്കവണ്ണം ദൈവം ലോകത്തെ അത്രമാത്രം സ്നേഹിച്ചു". (ജോണ്‍ 3,16).  "ആദ്യം അവിടുന്ന് നമ്മെ സ്നേഹിച്ചു,അതിനാൽ നാമും അവിടുത്തെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു".  (1 ജോണ്‍. 4, 19). 

"ഇമ്മാനുവേൽ",  എന്ന വാക്കിനർത്ഥം ദൈവം നമ്മോടുകൂടെ എന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല, ദൈവം നമ്മെപ്പോലെ, നമ്മിലൊരുവനായ്‌ എന്ന് കൂടി ചേർത്ത് വായിക്കണം എന്ന് കരുതുന്നു!
 
മാംസം ധരിച്ചു നമ്മോടൊത്ത് വസിക്കാൻ ഇറങ്ങി വന്ന ദൈവപുത്രൻ നല്കുന്ന കൂട്ടായ്മയും അത് തീർക്കുന്ന ക്രിസ്ത്വനുഭവവും  വരും വര്ഷം നമ്മിൽ സന്തോഷം നിറക്കട്ടെ.

തീകട്ട

"ഓരോ ബലിയും ഓരോരുത്തരെയും ഇനി പൊള്ളിച്ചുതുടങ്ങും!!" അതെ, പൊള്ളിച്ചു തുടങ്ങണം.... ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ എത്യോപ്യയിലാണ്. ഇവിടുത്തെ എത്യോപ്യൻ കുര്ബാന ക്രമത്തിൽ, വിശുദ്ധ കുര്ബ്ബാനയെ വിളിക്കുന്നത്‌ "തീകട്ട", "തീകനൽ" എന്നര്ഥം വരുന്ന ഒരു പദമാണ്‌. എത്രയോ അര്തവത്തായ ഒരു പദമാണിത്. ഈ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ കൂദാശയെ ഒരു മാത്രയെങ്കിലും ഗൌരവമായിട്ടെടുത്തിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ എത്രയോ ഗാഡമായ ഒരു ശുദ്ധീകരണ അനുഭവം അത് നമുക്ക് സമ്മാനിക്കുമായിരുന്നു?? നമ്മുടെ പൊള്ളത്തരങ്ങളും, കന്നത്തരങ്ങളും, സ്നേഹരാഹിത്യങ്ങളും എത്ര മാത്രം അത് നമുക്ക് വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിത്തരുമായിരുന്നു?? എന്നിട്ടും, കാലാകാലങ്ങളായി നാം അനുഷ്ടിച്ചു വരുന്ന നമ്മുടെ വി. കുര്ബ്ബാന ആചരണങ്ങൾ നമ്മെ ആരെയും പൊള്ളിക്കുന്നില്ലല്ലോ എന്ന സങ്കടം മാത്രം ബാക്കി!!

ഒഷോയും ബുധനും ക്രിസ്തുവും

ഓഷോയുടെ വാക്കുകളിൽ ബുദ്ധനും ക്രിസ്തുവും തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസം ഇതായിരുന്നു.  ഓര്മ്മക്കായ് എനിക്കെന്തെങ്കിലും തരിക, ആനന്ദൻ ബുധന്നോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.  പിരിയുമ്പോൾ ഒരു മുല്ലപ്പൂവെടുത്തു അവന്റെ കരങ്ങളിൽ കൊടുത്തു.  "ഇത് സൂക്ഷികുക".  ബുദ്ധന്റെ മനസ്സിന്റെ സുഗന്ധം പോലെ ആ മുല്ലപ്പൂവിന്റെ സൌരഭ്യം ആനന്ദന്റെ കൂടെ... പ്രഭാധത്തിൽ, മധ്യാനത്തിൽ, സന്ധ്യയിൽ....പിന്നെടെപ്പോഴോ ആ മുല്ലപ്പൂവ് വാടി.  പതുക്കെ പതുക്കെ ആനന്ദന്റെ മനസ്സില്നിന്നു ബുദ്ധന്റെ ഓര്മ്മകളും. 

വിശ്വാസം

അത്തിവൃക്ഷം പൂക്കുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും മുന്തിരിയിൽ ഫലങ്ങളില്ലെങ്കിലും, ഒലിവു മരത്തിൽ കായ്കൾ ഇല്ലാതായാലും, വയലുകളിൽ ധാന്യം വിളയുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും അട്ടിന്കൂട്ടം ആലയിൽ അറ്റുപോയാലും കന്നുകാലികൾ തൊഴുത്തിൽ   ഇല്ലാതായാലും ഞാൻ കർത്താവിൽ ആനന്ദിക്കും.  എന്റെ രക്ഷകനായ ദൈവത്തിൽ ഞാൻ സന്തോഷിക്കും എന്തെന്നാൽ കര്ത്താവായ ദൈവമാണ് എന്റെ ബലം (ഹബക്കുക്ക് 3:17 - 18). 

പൌലോസിന്റെ മുള്ളും സ്തോത്രഗീതവും!!

പൌലോസിന്റെ മുള്ളിനെ ധ്യാനിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് പൌലോസിന്റെ മഗ്നിഫികാത്ത് ശ്രധയിൽ പെട്ടത്‌.  അതെ, ഹന്നയും മേരിയും  പോലെ പൌലോസും പാടുന്നുണ്ട് ഒരു സ്തോത്രഗീതം, "പൌലോസിന്റെ മഗ്നിഫിക്കാത്ത്".  2 കോറിന്തോസ് 12, 9: "ഞാൻ പൂർവാധികം സന്തോഷത്തോടെ എന്റെ ബലഹീനതയെക്കുറിച്ച് പ്രസംസിക്കും".  നോക്കണം, തന്റെ ശിഷ്യ്ത്വ പരിപൂർണതയിൽ കളങ്കമായിരുന്ന ആ മുള്ളിനെ എടുത്തു മാറ്റണേ എന്ന് കരഞ്ഞപെക്ഷിച്ചവനാണ് പൌലോസ്.

മറിയം ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ശിരസ്സിൽ അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്ത പരിമള തൈലത്തിന്റെ വെങ്കല്ഭരണി പോലെ,,,,, ആ ജീവിതം ഒരു തുള്ളി പോലും തനിക്കുവേണ്ടി അവൾ മാറ്റിവയ്കുന്നില്ല.  ആള്കൂട്ടത്തില്നിന്നാരോ വിളിച്ചു ചോദിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.  മുന്നൂറു ദനാരാ വിലയുള്ള ഈ പരിമളദ്രവ്യം സ്ത്രീയെ നീ  എന്തിനു പാഴാക്കുന്നു?? 

YOU SMELL CHRIST

St. Francis, in the initial stages of his conversion had great aversion towards the lepers.  He couldn't even bear the sight of a leper.  One day, as he was walking on the road he sees a leper coming opposite to him and Francis wanted to close his eyes so that he wouldn't even see him.  But then, he wanted to overcome his natural instinct and goes to the leper and begins to embrace him and kiss him in his wounds.  The leper, in tears now, cries out in a loud voice: "You smell Christ, you smell Christ". 

What do I smell like? As a Christian and all the more as a religious I am called to carry with me the “aroma of Christ”.  St. Francis of Assisi once said, "Preach the Gospel at all times; only if necessary use words." He was talking about the aroma of Christ. Can people smell Christ in me? A question to ask myself on this feast day of St. Francis.

The Ant and the Contact Lens!

I received this little episode from a friend of mine through an e-mail. As many of us do have similar experiences in our lives too, thought it would help in offering us some light on our life’s journey.

Brenda was a young woman who was invited to go rock climbing.  Although she was scared to death, she went with her group to a tremendous granite cliff.  In spite of her fear, she put on the gear, took a hold on the rope, and started up the face of that rock.  Well, she got to a ledge where she could take a breath.  As she was hanging on there, the safety rope snapped against Brenda’s eyes and knocked out her contact lens.

 Cari confratelli,

Ogni qual volta celebriamo un santo, celebriamo infatti la Pasqua, perché i santi ci mostrano cosa possa realizzare la resurrezione di Cristo nella vita delle persone.  Oggi celebriamo la festa di San Mattia, questo apostolo, possiamo dire, dell'ultima ora e addirittura chiamato a sostituire chi è stato prescelto e ha tradito.  Mattia non dice neanche una parola, eppure rivela molto col suo atteggiamento di discrezione e disponibilità, due qualità preziosissime per un apostolo, senza le quali l'apostolato può diventare un mero adempimento di doveri.

Penso che anche le due letture di oggi ci offrano un’allusione al profilo di un autentico apostolo.  Nella prima lettura abbiamo la figura di Pietro, capo del collegio apostolico, che, prima della elezione di Mattia, dopo aver spiegato le prerequisiti per un apostolo, dice alla comunità quale sia la sua missione fondamentale; cioè diventare testimone della Risurrezione di Cristo.  E Gesù nel Vangelo ci dice come possiamo essere testimoni della Sua Risurrezione:  “Rimanete nel mio amore; questo è il mio comandamento: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri, come io vi ho amati".

La vita esuberante in Cristo (Omelia nella comunità)

Cari confratelli,

Il Vangelo che abbiamo appena ascoltato è molto bello e ieri abbiamo già sufficientemente riflettuto su questo brano del Vangelo.  Per cui faccio solo un accenno ad un aspetto del vangelo e prendo lo spunto dalle conclusioni di tutte le due letture di oggi. Nella prima lettura abbiamo il racconto dagli Atti degli apostoli, dove Pietro deve giustificare davanti alla comunità la sua scelta di essere “entrato in casa di uomini pagani” e lo fa raccontando una visione che ha cambiato il suo cuore e la sua mentalità.  Alla fine tutta la folla si calmò e dice il testo che glorifica Dio dicendo: “Anche ai pagani Dio ha concesso che si convertano perché abbiano la vita!”. Nel Vangelo abbiamo la stupenda catechesi sul buon Pastore e Gesù finisce l’episodio dicendo: “Io sono venuto perché abbiano la vita e l’abbiano in abbondanza”. A mio parere c’è una piccola parola dove è sintetizzato tutto ciò che rende inconciliabili il pastore e il ladro. La parola è “vita”.  Penso che questo è l’unica aspirazione di tutti gli uomini, cioè, “avere la vita in pienezza”. Possiamo dire che questo è l’unico progetto di Dio: che l'uomo diventi Figlio di Dio e abbia la vita in Gesù.

Cari confratelli, 

In questo giorno in cui facciamo la memoria dei santi martiri, San Paolo Miki e compagni, anche se non abbiamo presso le letture proprie del santo del giorno, penso che possiamo trovare una splendida sintonia tra le due letture di oggi, che ci possono offrire uno spunto per la nostra meditazione.   

Se vogliamo chiederci, quale è la novità che ha portato Gesù, mi sembra il fatto che Gesù ha capovolto tutta la concezione umana su Dio.  Era una verità indiscussa di ogni religione del suo tempo che gli uomini erano stati creati per servire il loro Dio. Anche nella religione ebraica veniva insegnato che gli uomini erano a servizio di un Dio sovrano dell'universo. 

NON CE NE SIAMO PENTITI

Una riflessione su Sacerdozio scritto da Karl Rahner per 25mo anniversario della sua Ordinazione Sacerdotale. 


Celebriamo insieme il 25° di sacerdozio. In un convitto teologico dove i giovani, chiamati da Dio in Cristo, si preparano al sacerdozio, la no­stra festa trova il suo luogo più adatto. Questi giovani intendono essere un giorno! quello che siamo ora noi, che possiamo guardare ai nostri 25 anni di vita sacerdotale. Perciò è giusta la no­stra festa. 

What tomorrow holds for us?

This is certainly a consoling thought, especially for all those who are anxious about what is in store for them in the year 2012.

We certainly do not know WHAT TOMORROW HOLDS FOR US, but there is something that we are sure of and that is WHO HOLDS TOMORROW FOR US.  We know that this God who holds tomorrow in his hands is difficult to understand but he is a loving and provident God nevertheless.  What we need to do is to trust Him, firm in the confidence that His plans and dreams for us are surely better than anything we can plan and dream for ourselves. 

Hats off to you Mr. Farmer, there is Hope yet!

Who ever knew about Alderman Alan Graham, an ordinary farmer from northern Ireland, until he appeared in BBC in the past few days as one of the men who made headlines in the year 2011.  But what has he done to get to be a part of such an illustrious list.  This Northern Ireland farmer had agreed to allow R&B singer Rihanna to shoot a video in one of his fields.   But when he drew up the agreement little did he know who she was and what she was up to. But she soon caught his eye when he was about to head for home after work in the field and saw her on his land in little more than a bikini.
