Another year at hand, a chance freely given. I have done nothing to merit it. Remember that parable of the fig tree in the Gospel of Luke. The master wanted to cut it off because it wasn’t bearing any fruit. But the good farmer pleads with the master to give it one more chance. (cfr. Luke. 13: 6-9)
O God, each time I come across this passage there is a shivering that goes through my veins. “The Fig tree planted in the Vineyard”! The phrase needs attention… no one ever plants a fig tree in the vineyard. Yes, everything was just set for me. The good ambient, my family, my friends, good teachers, the good hearted neighbor and all these formed a rich vineyard for this fig tree. Certainly, that good master has all the right to expect better fruits from this fig tree. But I fear I have nothing to offer.
But I dare to hope. I dare to hope in the One who can transform my weaknesses into my strengths. As the New Year just draws in, I remain like the little boy with five loaves and two fish; I have only fragments, just fragments of broken relationships, selfish love, distracted prayers and so on and so forth. I place it in His hands believing firmly that He can make a banquet out of my fragments!
HAPPY NEW YEAR
